The US will use diplomacy and work with its companions to “expel each final Iranian boot” from Syria, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has vowed.
Mr Pompeo warned there can be no US reconstruction help for areas managed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad till Iran and its proxies had left.
He was talking in Cairo three weeks after President Donald Trump introduced US troops had been pulling out of Syria.
The choice shocked US allies and sparked sturdy criticism in Washington.
Mr Pompeo, who has been looking for to reassure allies following Mr Trump’s shock announcement, mentioned: “America is not going to retreat till the fear battle is over. We are going to labour tirelessly alongside you to defeat Isis [the Islamic State group], al-Qaeda and different jihadists that threaten our safety and yours.”
He added that the US was a “pressure for good” within the Center East, including: “The place America retreats, chaos follows.”
Why did Pompeo point out Iran?
Iran, alongside Russia, has been supporting the Syrian authorities within the Syrian civil conflict, offering arms, navy advisers, and reportedly fight troops.
The US is deeply suspicious of Iranian exercise within the Center East and views it as a destabilising pressure within the area.
Additionally it is an ally of Israel and Saudi Arabia, two of Iran’s foes.
On Thursday, Mr Pompeo mentioned “we is not going to ease our marketing campaign to cease Iran’s malevolent affect and actions in opposition to this area and the world.”
He added that American sanctions in opposition to Iran had been “the strongest in historical past and can preserve getting more durable”.
